Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.

The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.

In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
